Third-party presence: Reddit, Wikipedia, reviews and directories
Answer engines draw heavily on third-party sites (Pew found Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the most cited sources in Google AI summaries), so what others say about you matters. Participate honestly: disclose affiliations on Reddit, don't edit Wikipedia about yourself, never buy or incentivize reviews, and keep directory listings accurate.
Why it matters
In Pew’s March 2025 browsing data, Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the most frequently cited sources in Google AI summaries and in standard results.[1] Google expanded its partnership with Reddit in February 2024, giving it access to Reddit’s Data API.[2] Independent study

A practical plan
- List where engines already get information about you: ask each engine “What is [brand]?” and note the cited sources.
- Correct errors on profiles you control (Business Profile, Bing Places, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, industry directories).
- Build a review program that asks every customer, in line with Google’s policy.[6]
- Earn coverage from journalists and industry sites with data or expertise (see citations).
- Join communities as a known, disclosed expert, not with anonymous promotion.
Red flags
- “We’ll get you a Wikipedia page” services.
- Upvote or aged-account schemes on Reddit.
- Review gating or paid reviews.[6][7]
Frequently asked questions
Should my company post on Reddit for AEO?
Only as a disclosed, genuinely helpful participant who follows each subreddit's rules. Covert promotion is usually removed and can damage your reputation.
Can I create a Wikipedia article about my business?
Wikipedia strongly discourages it. If your business is notable, independent editors can write about it; you can suggest changes on the talk page with disclosure.
Are incentivized reviews allowed?
Not on Google Maps, and the FTC's 2024 rule bans fake reviews and buying reviews in the U.S.
