AEO grew out of three waves: entity-based answers (Google's Knowledge Graph, 2012), single-source answers (featured snippets and voice assistants in the 2010s), and generative answers that synthesize many sources (AI Overviews from May 2024, ChatGPT search from October 2024, AI Mode from May 2025).

Three eras

  1. Entity answers (2012 onward): structured facts answer “who” and “what”; the work is getting your entity recognized (entity SEO).
  2. Single-source answers (about 2014–2023): featured snippets and voice assistants quote one page, rewarding concise answers near a question heading.
  3. Generative, multi-source answers (2023 onward): engines retrieve several documents, synthesize and cite. Visibility is shared, clicks drop,[21] and measurement shifts to citations (how answer engines work).

Frequently asked questions

When did AI Overviews launch?

Google launched AI Overviews in the U.S. at Google I/O in May 2024, after testing them as the Search Generative Experience from May 2023.

Are featured snippets still relevant?

Yes. They still appear, and the same qualities (a clear, sourced answer to a specific question) help with AI answers.
