Measuring AI visibility

From AEO.wiki, the Answer Engine Optimization reference · Last reviewed · By · Published by Local Blitz · How we research

Combine first-party data (Google Search Console's Generative AI performance report, Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, GA4 referral traffic and server logs) with a repeatable prompt panel that records whether engines mention and cite you. Share of voice is your mentions divided by all tracked brand mentions across that panel. Treat third-party estimates as samples, not ground truth.

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it refers,[4] so those visits are easy to spot.

Prompt panels and share of voice

  1. Write 30–100 prompts real customers would ask, grouped by topic and funnel stage (the fan-out planner helps).
  2. Run them on each engine on a schedule, logged out or in a clean profile, from a fixed location.
  3. Record: brand mentioned (Y/N), position, cited URLs, sentiment, factual errors.
  4. Share of voice = your mentions ÷ total mentions of all tracked brands.

Answers vary between runs, users and locations, so trend the numbers over weeks rather than reading one run. Practitioner practice

Be careful with tools

Google warns about third-party tools that claim to report its internal metrics.[5] Prompt-tracking tools sample outputs; they don’t see real user query volumes. Use them for direction, not as ground truth. A neutral list is on tools and resources.
