Freshness and content updates
Update pages when facts change, show a visible “Last updated” date that matches dateModified in structured data, keep sitemap lastmod accurate, and notify Bing with IndexNow. Changing a date without changing content doesn't make a page fresh.
Why freshness matters
Answer engines retrieve live pages when they ground an answer,[1][2] so outdated facts get repeated or skipped. Bing advises keeping content updated and providing accurate sitemap lastmod values.[3] Vendor-documented

What not to do
Google’s helpful content guidance asks: “Are you changing the date of pages to make them seem fresh when the content has not substantially changed?”[7] Don’t. Also avoid future dates and multiple conflicting dates on a page.[4]
A review cadence
- Monthly: pages about fast-moving topics (engine features, prices, policies).
- Quarterly: top traffic and top-cited pages (find them in AI visibility reports).
- Yearly: evergreen explainers.
