Citations and brand mentions

From AEO.wiki, the Answer Engine Optimization reference · Last reviewed · By · Published by Local Blitz · How we research

AI answers cite pages they retrieve (usually pages that already rank well) and mention brands that are widely and consistently discussed across the web. Earn both the same way: publish original, verifiable information and get independent coverage. Google says seeking inauthentic mentions does not help.

What the evidence says

What vendors say

Google: seeking inauthentic mentions is not helpful, and its spam policies now apply to generative AI responses.[5][6] Bing counts link schemes and prompt injection as abuse.[7] Vendor-documented

How to earn citations

  1. Be the primary source. Publish original data, prices, test results or expert explanations others will reference.
  2. Rank for the questions. Classic SEO still drives retrieval (see fan-out planner).
  3. Make facts quotable. One claim, one number, one source, one date per sentence (see content structure).
  4. Get covered. Digital PR, expert commentary, podcasts and YouTube create independent mentions.
  5. Fix wrong facts at the source (profiles, directories, outdated articles).

What not to do

Frequently asked questions

How do I get cited in ChatGPT?

Allow OAI-SearchBot, rank well for the question in search, and publish original, clearly sourced information. There is no submission form.

Do backlinks still matter for AI answers?

Indirectly. They help pages rank, and ranking pages get retrieved. Ahrefs found brand mentions correlated more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks did.
